Living with Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s is a progressive condition that affects the brain and the way the body moves. Common symptoms include tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement, and it can also affect sleep, mood and memory.

Symptoms can vary from day to day and even hour to hour, so care needs to be flexible and planned around the person’s good and bad times.

What families often tell us is hard

  • Slower movement, stiffness or tremor making daily tasks harder
  • Taking medication at exactly the right times
  • Balance problems and a higher risk of falls
  • Difficulty with swallowing, speech or handwriting
  • Tiredness, poor sleep and changes in mood

How our carers can help

  • Unhurried help with getting up, washing and dressing
  • Medication prompts at the times set by your care team
  • Support moving around the home safely
  • Preparing meals and drinks in the way that suits you
  • Companionship, trips out and keeping up hobbies
  • Night care or live-in care when more support is needed

Our carers provide personal care and practical support, not nursing or medical treatment. We work alongside your GP, nurses and specialist teams. This page is general information, not medical advice: please speak to your GP, call NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.
