Questions & answers

Your questions about home care

Arranging care for yourself or someone you love raises lots of questions. Here are the ones families ask us most.

Getting started

How quickly can home care start?

We can usually arrange 24-hour live-in care within 24 hours, and emergency care in as little as 2–5 days from your care assessment. Call 01784 697000 and we’ll tell you what we can put in place for your situation.

What happens at the free home assessment?

A Faith’s Walk care manager visits you at home, free and with no obligation. We talk about your health, your routine, what you need help with and what matters to you, and use this to create a care plan tailored to you.

Which areas do you cover?

We provide home care across Surrey (Spelthorne, Runnymede, Elmbridge, Woking and Surrey Heath), the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Slough and South Buckinghamshire. You can check your postcode on our Areas We Cover page.

Do I need a referral from my GP or social worker?

No. You can contact us directly, whether you are arranging care for yourself or for a family member. We are also happy to work with GPs, social workers and hospital discharge teams.

Can I meet my carer before care starts?

Yes. We match you with a carer who suits your needs and personality, brief them fully, and introduce you before care begins.

Costs and funding

How much does home care cost?

The cost depends on the type of care, how many hours or visits you need and when they happen (for example nights and weekends). After your free assessment we explain the costs of your care package clearly, before anything starts.

Can the council help pay for home care?

You can ask your local council’s adult social care team for a free care needs assessment. If you are eligible, the council will also carry out a financial assessment to decide how much it will contribute. In our area this is Surrey County Council, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Slough Borough Council or Buckinghamshire Council, depending on where you live.

Are there benefits that can help with the cost of care?

Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care, and some people with complex health needs qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. Age UK, Citizens Advice and your council can help you check what you may be entitled to.

Our carers and quality

Are you registered with the CQC?

Yes. Faith’s Walk Health Care Services Ltd is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. You can read our CQC profile and rating on the CQC website.

Are your carers trained and DBS checked?

Yes. All our carers go through a robust recruitment process including an enhanced DBS check, and complete the Care Certificate, moving and handling and specialist training before working unsupervised.

Are your carers employed by you or by an agency?

Our carers are directly employed by Faith’s Walk, with company benefits and holiday pay. If your regular carer is ever absent, we arrange cover so your care carries on.

Will I see the same carer?

We aim to provide consistent carers who get to know you, your routine and your preferences. This is especially important for people living with dementia.

How do you keep families informed?

We work closely with family members, GPs, social workers and therapists. Care is recorded in our own Care Runner system, and your information is never shared with other companies.

Types of care

What is the difference between live-in care and a care home?

With live-in care, a fully trained carer lives with you in your own home and supports you day and night, so you keep your routine, your home, your pets and your community. In a care home you move into a shared setting with staff caring for many residents.

What is the difference between a waking night and a sleepover?

A waking night carer stays awake and available throughout the night. A sleepover carer sleeps in your home and is there if you need them during the night.

Do you help people coming home from hospital?

Yes. In an emergency we can put waking nights, sleepovers or 24-hour live-in care in place so your loved one can come home from hospital and recover at home, subject to approval by the hospital discharge team.

Do you provide care for people living with dementia?

Yes. Our carers receive specialist dementia training and focus on consistent carers, familiar routines, a safe home and meaningful activities. We also support people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, learning disabilities and other long-term conditions.

Can you give family carers a break?

Yes. Our respite care can be live-in or on a visiting basis, for a few days or a few weeks, whether it is planned or needed in an emergency.
