Living with frailty and falls

As people get older, some become frail: less strong, slower to recover from illness and more likely to fall. A fall can also dent someone’s confidence, even when there is no serious injury.

Someone calling in regularly, or staying overnight, can reassure the whole family and help a person stay at home safely. If a fall is serious, always call 999.

What families often tell us is hard

  • Being afraid of falling, or having already fallen
  • Getting to the toilet safely at night
  • Less strength or energy for daily tasks
  • Not eating or drinking enough
  • Family worried about their loved one being alone

How our carers can help

  • Regular visits so someone is checking in
  • Help getting up, washing and going to bed
  • Reducing the risk of falls at night with night care
  • Encouraging meals and drinks
  • Keeping walkways clear and telling families about concerns
  • Live-in care for round-the-clock reassurance

Our carers provide personal care and practical support, not nursing or medical treatment. We work alongside your GP, nurses and specialist teams. This page is general information, not medical advice: please speak to your GP, call NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.

Common questions

Can care stop someone from falling?

No one can promise that falls will never happen, but support can reduce the risks, for example by helping with moving around at night. Your GP can also refer you to a falls service.
